LOST PORTRAITS

Seamus McGuinness, Ireland

Gallery Meno parkas (Rotušės a. 26, Kaunas)

Opening 29th Oct 2009, 6 pm

This series of work emerges from the Lived Life’s archive[1]. As parts of that research process, family members who have lost relatives to suicide, have donated belonging, including images of there deceased family members. A series of digitally woven portraits and a dvd of the process was produced.42 life-sized textile images will be installed collectively at the actual height of the each of the deceased, as if in a portrait gallery, looking at the viewer, yet in absence - individually apart, yet collectively together. This series of jacquards was developed  with Jacquard designer Monika Zaltauskaite of Kaunas Art Academy (facilated and developed as part of the Education and research programme T07) and woven in JSC Audejas, Vilnius. A dvd (120 mins) of these 42 portraits being woven, these traces of individual lost lives will also be presented.

Whilst this research was conducted in Ireland the experience of loss around suicide is universal. The works aims to create an alternative language corning suicide and the reality of the act. Lithuania has the highest rate of suicide in the EU[2]. The primary audience for these works is families and friend of the Lithuanian population who have lost loved ones to suicide in Lithuania.
