Janis Jefferies is Professor of Visual Arts and Artistic Director of Goldsmiths Digital Studios at Goldsmiths College.  She is an artist, writer and curator.  During the last 25 years she has made significant contributions to the practice and theory of contemporary textile art within the field of visual and material culture at international level, through solo exhibitions of work (UK, Poland, America, Canada and Australia), conferences and professional seminars (eg. UK, America, Canada),  and artist residencies at the Universities of Wollongong and Newcastle (Australia), visiting professorships at Art Institute of Chicago and University of South Australia,  curatorial work (13 since 1979), 37 exhibitions (5 solo), 42 publications, 10 catalogue essays for artists of international standing, 2 edited books and several chapter contributions to anthologies distributed by Manchester and Edinburgh University Presses, Telos Art Publishing, Berg Publishers, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, USA.  She is an associate researcher with Hexagram  (Institute for Research Creation in Media Arts and Technologies), Concordia University, Montreal on electronic textiles and new forms of media communication in cloth. Her expertise in textile production facilitates the material translation of digital information into dynamic fabrics in either printed or jacquard woven form.  She is particularly interested in digitisation as just one further stage in a continual process of translation in which textiles (in particular) are displaced from their 'originary' classification/production and re-located in virtual space.
