Sampler-Cultureclash Collective textile and sound workshop

COLLABORATIVE PARTICIPATORY WEEK

Sampler-Cultureclash Collective (lead by David Littler, UK) textile and sound workshop & DJ performance

sampler-cultureclash is an artist led research project that aims to explore the connections between the cultures of embroidery and dj-ing, through the common word “sampler”. It explores sampling as a creative process; celebrating trialling, experimenting and copying as a way of developing new ideas.

The project explores the tensions between “commons” and “copyright”. It has been developed as an open source platform, for collective making and for the sharing and gifting of ideas and knowledge. The project celebrates the continuing relationship between people, textiles, machines and sound, and brings together the past, the present and the imagined. The project uses a wide range of technologies both analogue and digital to turn patterns and textiles into sound, and sound back into patterns and textiles. This includes using digital visual and music software, live programming and sampling software, and older technology such as piano-players, record players, sewing machines and embroidery needles. We also dismantle old textile and musical instruments and turn them into new DIY machines for playing textiles. We use traditional embroidered samplers from the 16/17/18th century and through a variety of processes turn these into sound pieces, and using the sounds they create then turn these into new visual pieces. The project celebrates old ideas as well as developing new possibilities, and brings together people of different ages, gender, ethnicity and cultures.

The audience members will be involved at various points throughout the performance – their words, sounds, actions becoming part of the work created, so they move from passive audience members to active participants. We would like the performance to be filmed, so it can be shown as part of the Biennial exhibition and/or on-line.

In addition to the performance, the one-day sampler laboratory workshop will be done. The laboratory will explore textiles and sound through the art of sampling, collective making and sharing of ideas. The laboratory will be documented, and this along with the final sound piece could be displayed as part of the Biennial, either physically in a gallery space or online (or both).

A short montage film with extracts of a rehearsal and improvised performance are available to watch via vimeo:

Kärt Ojavee’s experimental workshop on smart textiles

COLLABORATIVE PARTICIPATORY WEEK

Kärt Ojavee (Estonia) will lead an experimental workshop on smart textiles.

The main goal of the workshop is to create a soft sensor, using smart textiles, such as conductive threads, conductive fabric etc. In order to try out of the „fabric switch“ , powersource and an output of light source (LED-s) will be attached to the sensor. All of the participants will create a different kind of the switch; the technique of making can vary: knitting, embroidering, sewing, crocheting or any other techniques can be applied.

1st day

A lecture about smart materials. Getting to know the materials. Discussions in groups of two about what kind of switches can be created.

2nd day

The groups of two present their ideas. Starting to design the switches, drawing out the scheme and choosing materials.

3rd day

Working on switches in material, realizing the ideas.

4th day

finishing the switches, presenting the results.

Workshop “ArchiLace – Space Crafting”

COLLABORATIVE PARTICIPATORY WEEK

Rachel Wingfield & Mathias Gmachl (UK) will lead a workshop “ArchiLace – Space Crafting”, uniting textile and architecture skills for creative change of the public spaces.

The workshop will explore the potential of large-scale, self-supporting Archilace structures as a new mode for designers, architects and citizens to intervene with the built environment.

The approach to the workshop recognizes architecture as a process and in a state of constant repair, and builds on the unique ability of textiles to flow, dissect and create configurable, flexible and adaptable environments.

‘Architecture should only provide a framework, in which the inhabitants might construct their homes according to their needs and ideas, free from any paternalism by a master builder.’ (Yona Friedman)

The workshop will combine a parametric design process with a hands-on crafting technique to create an ephemeral, spatial installation designed and fabricated by workshop participants.

Lace-making together with strong composite and smart fibres will be introduced as a method to craft space and reflect on the materiality and fabrication processes within the architectural practice. Textile principles from weaving, crossing and twisting fibres to folding, bending and seaming will be used as a model for experimental space crafting.

Participants will be parametrically designing continuous surface topologies and membranes using Rhino/Grasshopper and translating these digital drawings into plans for an Archilace fabrication process.

Weaving composite textile structures allows for virtually any imaginable surface to be created from a small number of parts. Recently discovered structures that were previously unbuildable can be fabricated by hand using a textile, curvilinear approach – breaking the rectilinear geometry of our built environment with a non-Euclidean geometry made from curved structural elements tangentially joined.
