The tour of Kaunas biennial expositions continues. Following the invitation of Rasa Grybaite, exhibition of Gao Yuan (Grand prix winner at Kaunas Biennail in 2011, Taiwan) and textile artist J. Petruskeviciene (Lithuania) was opened in V. Grybas memorial museum in Jurbarkas. During the opening ceremony R. Grybaite (manager of V. Grybas museum), biennial director V. Vitkiene and J. Petruskeviciene performed a brief introduction of both artists and Kaunas biennial.
The “12 moons”, a portrait series of 12 women with their infants by Gao Yuan, present a subject of western culture expansion in the east. By combining western depiction of Madonna with child and characters of contemporary Chinese women, the artist questions relation between western and eastern models of existence. These multidimensional and multi layered works of art earned the Grand Prix award and an opportunity for the artist to make a personal exhibition during the following Kaunas biennial UNITEXT in 2013.
By combining traditional and contemporary textile approaches Jurate Petruskeviciene connects present and past, traditional and contemporary expression. Through the continuity of traditional values time reaches certain quality of homogeneity in her works. Her installation “The World of Emilija” is a miniature of a real gallery space which is filled with artist’s personal relics. This work creates a relative relation between individual past, memory and present.
